10 causes of depression and anxiety

Beyond the psychological, social and emotional aspects, there is usually a biological reason as to why you feel the way you do.

Did you know that there are a number of physiological causes of depression and/or anxiety that can be treated by addressing the root cause? In her book 'A Mind of your Own', holistic psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan discusses the five 'pretenders' of mental illness. These include vitamin B12 deficiency, gluten sensitivity, hypothyroidism, reactive hypoglycemia, and prescription medication. Inspired by her work, I discuss some of these and add a few of my own:

  1. Digestive problems
  2. Hormonal imbalances
  3. Thyroid disease
  4. Poor blood sugar regulation
  5. The wrong type of dietary fats
  6. Food Intolerances
  7. Over-the-counter and prescribed medication
  8. Pyrrole disorder
  9. Methylation issues
  10. Poor sleep

The causes mentioned above can all have an impact on the balance in body chemistry and affect the availability, synthesis, and breakdown of important neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation.

Over the next few weeks, I will delve into each one of these causes in greater detail.

Stay tuned for future posts.
